Quarterly Report - Q2 2025
Profit Warnings, HM Courts Filings,
and Initial Stage Winding Up Petitions.
New analysis from InfolinkGazette shows yet another surge in UK profit warnings, the number of Insolvencies remain elevated and Winding Up Petitions hit an all-time high.
Profit Warnings
Profit Warnings in Q2 2025 surged by over 45% from 107 in Q1 2025, to 156 in Q2 2025 and is an increase of 12%, up from 139 in the corresponding period last year Q2 2024.
156 is the highest number of Profit Warnings seen in a single quarter for more than 2 years

Companies citing a material uncertainty or going concern continue to level out although numbers remain elevated. Our data shows that an increasing number of companies (51) have cited lower sales and increased costs as the primary driver for reporting a Profit Warning.

HM Courts filings
The number of debtor driven filings went up from 576 in Q2 2024 to 598 in Q2 2025.
In Q1 2024, numbers peaked at 744 notices. The figures are encouraging because this quarter also shows a small decrease from the previous quarter Q1 2025, when 660 filings were made. We should mention that whilst our data shows a levelling off, these numbers remain hugely elevated when compared to just 183 filings in Q2 2021.

Notices of Intention to Appoint an Administrator (224 in Q2 2025 vs 312 in Q1 2025) and Notice of Appointment to appoint an administrator (263 in Q2 2025 vs 240 in Q1 2025) make up the majority of notices filed.
Initial stage winding-up petitions
Tech City Labs upgraded our processes to provide a complete data set which resulted in 3232 petitions being reported in Q4 2024. This figure fell to 2479 at the end of Q1 2025 and our data shows that Winding Up Petitions are on the rise again as 3418 petitions were filed in Q2 2025.

HMRC continue to be the main driver of these petitions although we are now seeing a significantly larger number of petitions being filed by other companies.
S. Kaler, Head of Data at InfolinkGazette commented:
“At the end of Q1 2025, we reported a 23% decline in the number of petitions being filed. At the time, we urged caution as although the decrease seemed positive, we noted that overall, WUPA’s had gone up by over 105% when compared to the previous quarter. The latest data has justified our concerns as the number of WUPA’s in Q2 2025 has gone up to a new all-time high of 3418.”
