Annual Report - 2025

Profit Warnings, HM Courts Filings,

and Initial Stage Winding Up Petitions.

New analysis from InfolinkGazette confirms the number of Insolvency notices and Company profit warnings remains high.

Profit Warnings

Figures released by InfolinkGazette confirm our prediction that company profit warnings would continue to rise in 2025.

Edging upwards from their total of 477 in 2023 to 482 by the end of 2024, profit warnings increased year on year by just over 1%. However, as predicted, that number rose sharply in 2025, going up by 20.3% 2024 to a new high of 580 profit warnings issued throughout the year.

Infolink data also showed there were at least 241 instances where UK companies warned of a Material Uncertainty. 220 of these were stand-alone going concern events, accounting for around 38% of all profit warnings in 2025. 134 going concern warnings were instances where a company had revised their guidance significantly. Impacted sales were cited in 102 warnings, while increased costs were referenced in 125. Inflation was mentioned in 13 warnings.

Benjamin Sims, Managing Director at Tech City Labs, the company behind InfolinkGazette commented:

"The data continues to show that conditions remain challenging for many businesses. Profit warnings stayed at historically high levels in 2025, and the drivers we are seeing in the warnings continue to reflect pressure on costs and demand."”

HM Courts filings

Debtor driven filings also remained elevated, increasing by 5.2% on the previous year. 2564 filings were made in 2024, which rose to 2697 filings recorded in 2025. As expected, in 2025 we saw Notices of Intention to Appoint an Administrator (1143) and Notice of Appointment to Appoint an Administrator (1066) continue to make up the majority of notices filed.

Administration Applications went up by 31%, from 186 filings in 2024 to 244 filings in 2025. Company Voluntary Arrangements also increased by more than 9%, from 214 in 2024 to 234 in 2025.

Moratoriums remained relatively rare, with 10 (an increase of just 1 compared to 2024) during 2025.

Initial stage winding-up petitions

InfolinkGazette published figures show a significant increase in the number of Initial Stage Winding Up petitions being filed in 2025. 8,131 WUPAs were filed, up by more than 15% compared to the 7043 filed in 2024.

S. Kaler, Head of Data for InfolinkGazette at Tech City Labs commented:

“The increase in Winding Up Petitions continues to be driven mainly by HMRC actioned filings. Numbers increased from 3247 petitions brought by HMRC in 2024 to 4379 petitions in 2025, while Winding up Petitions not initiated by HMRC actually fell from 3796 in 2024 to 3752 in 2025. Despite the decline in petitions being filed by parties other than HMRC, the overall picture remains tough for many businesses.””
